German Church School Adis Ababa

The German Church School (GCS) is a social project of the Evangelical Community of the German Language in the Ethiopian capital Adis Ababa. Its beginnings date back to 1966. The school is the first and so far only integrative educational project in Ethiopia in which blind and sighted children are taught together. Instruction at the school is reserved exclusively for Ethiopian children from the poorest families from the slum surrounding the church property. The staff of the school includes only Ethiopian men and women. A few aid organizations support the project. The school is mainly financially supported by the German-speaking Protestant community in Ethiopia and private donors. Financing is secured through the mediation of personal sponsorships for the school children as well as project sponsorships, donations and grants from aid organizations.

In 2004, the then German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Eva Luise Köhler, wife of the former German Chancellor, visited the school in Ethiopia. Federal President, the school and paid tribute to the decades of work of the German-speaking Protestant congregation in Ethiopia, which is affiliated with the Evangelical Church in Germany.

In 2006, the partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium from Sandhausen began. As part of this partnership, students of the FEG hold workshops at the German Church School and exchange ideas with their partner students. The German Church School was founded in 1974 by the German Kreuzkirche (Evangelical Community of the German Language in Ethiopia) as part of the social project founded in 1966 in the north of Addis Ababa.

Currently, about 260 students in grades 1 to 8 attend the school. The aim of the school is to create a safe and inclusive learning environment. The German Church School is one of the few inclusive schools in Athlopia where children with various physical disabilities have the opportunity to learn with other students.

The pupils are selected exclusively from economically disadvantaged families in the area according to strict criteria. They are not only cared for and supported by the school and its supporters not only during their time at school, but also on their further educational path. The school is largely financed by donations from Germany.

School programme and possible studies

The school is based on the Ethiopian Elementary Education Curriculum, which covers grades 1 to 8. School leavers from the 8th grade onwards are supported by the school in various forms throughout their school and study time (e.g. tutoring on weekends, financial support, etc.). Each year, the two best graduates of the 8th grade are selected to attend the German embassy school up to the Abitur. This visit and subsequent studies are then further supported by the GCS.

Focus According to the Ethiopian curriculum, both STEM subjects and languages are taught. The languages that the students learn are Amharic, English, Afan Oromo and German.

German lessons
German has been taught as an extra-curricular subject since 2011. Currently, 60 students from 5th to 8th grade are learning German.

PASCH activities and international exchange
Every year, the students take part in various local and regional PASCH projects. As part of the initiative "Schools: Partners for the Future" (PASCH), the Goethe-Institut organizes international youth courses for students from PASCH schools from all over the world. Every year, scholarship holders from over 100 nations meet who have distinguished themselves at their schools through very good performance and high motivation to learn German in international communities (PASCH Initiative - Schools: Partners for the Future - Goethe-Institut).

At the 1st General Meeting, EaS decided to donate €200.00 to the German Church School. All other support services can only be paid through donations that explicitly state "GCS – German Church School" as the reason for payment.
