Walker for Whithney

Whitney (16) leidet an „Cerebral Palsy“. Die „Infantile Zerebralparese“ ist eine Bewegungsstörung, deren Ursache 
eine frühkindliche Hirnschädigung ist. Diese Hirnschädigung wurde verursacht durch eine Fehlbehandlung im Krankenhaus (Malaria Verdacht). Seit der Erkrankung von Whitney ist ihre Mutter Mercy für sie und ihren Bruder Anthony (13) allein verantwortlich, da sich der Vater getrennt hat. 
Whithney kann sich allein nicht bewegen und nicht mit Worten kommunizieren. Sie ist rund um die Uhr auf Hilfe angewiesen, so dass Mercy nicht außer Haus Geld verdienen kann. Die Kosten für Lebensunterhalt, Medikamente, Therapien und die teuren Windeln sind nur schwer zu stemmen. Mercy hat im letzten Jahr  eine Geflügelfarm aufgebaut, die sie mit Whitney gemeinsam betreibt.

Die Gesamtkosten - als Startinvestition - beliefen sich auf ca. €1.120. Das Geld wurde dank großzügiger Spenden durch eine Supportaktion schnell gesammelt und Mercy startete erfolgreich ihre Hühnerfarm.

Bei Whitney wurde eine Deformation am Bein operiert, daher trägt sie den Gips. Nach weiteren Behandlungen mit dem Ziel, dass sie vielleicht Laufen lernen kann, stagniert das nun, denn Physiotherapie ist in Kenia nicht zubekommen und wenn doch, dann ist sie kaum zu bezahlen!   

Whitney (16) suffers from "Cerebral Palsy". "Infantile cerebral palsy" is a movement disorder caused by early childhood brain damage. This brain damage was caused by incorrect treatment in the hospital (suspected malaria). Since Whitney's illness, her mother Mercy has been solely responsible for her and her brother Anthony (13), as the father has separated. Whithney cannot move on her own and cannot communicate with words. She is dependent on help around the clock, so Mercy cannot earn money outside the home. The costs for living, medication, therapies and the expensive diapers are difficult to bear. Mercy set up a poultry farm last year, which she runs together with Whitney.

The total costs - as a start-up investment - amounted to about €1,120. The money was quickly collected thanks to generous donations through a support campaign and Mercy successfully started her chicken farm.

Whitney has had a deformity in her leg operated, so she wears the cast. After further treatments with the aim that she might be able to learn to walk, this is now stagnating, because physiotherapy is not available in Kenya and if it is, it is hardly affordable!

Im Juni 2025 haben meine Frau und ich Mercy und Whitney besucht. Whitney ist 16 Jahre als, wiegt knapp 55 kg und ist ca. 1,5 Meter groß. Für ihre Rehabilitation braucht es Unterstützung, etwa in der Art eines Gehwagens. Solche Hilfsmittel sind in Kenia nicht zu bekommen. Der Hersteller, Elmi Reha aus Südtirol, stellt uns den MOVITA Junior für € 1.400 + 22% ital. USt. = € 1.708,00 zur Verfügung (Preisnachlass knapp € 1.000).

Dank großzügiger Spenden haben wir Ende Mai den Gehwagen bestellt. Bilder von der Übergabe des Movita siehe unten.

In June 2025, my wife and I visited Mercy and Whitney. Whitney is 16 years old, weighs just under 55 kg and is about 1.5 meters tall. For her rehabilitation, she needs support, for example in the form of a walker. Such aids are not available in Kenya. The manufacturer, Elmi Reha from South Tyrol, provides us with the MOVITA Junior for € 1,400 + 22% ital. VAT. = € 1,708.00 (price reduction just under € 1,000).

Ende Juli ist Hannes nach Kenia geflogen und hat den Movita ohne zusätztliche Kosten mitnehmen können. Dank der Hilfe von Freunden konnte das Gepäck und die Geh- und Stehhilfe trotz Gipsarm gut eingecheckt werden.

At the end of July, Hannes flew to Kenya and was able to take the Movita with him at no additional cost. Thanks to the help of friends, the luggage and the walking and standing aid could be checked in well despite the plaster arm.

Es war ein berührendes Erlebnis den Movita zu übergeben. Zunächst musste der Movita auf die Körpermaße von Withney angpasst werden. Dann der erste Einstieg. Verwunderung bei ihr - ich stehe. Nach einiger Zeit kamen die ersten Beinbewegungen - sie tut sich nicht leicht, denn das linke Bein ist verkürzt und sie scheint es nur bedingt kontrollieren bzw. steuern zu können.

It was a touching experience to hand over the Movita. First of all, the Movita had to be adjusted to Withney's body measurements. Then the first entry. Astonishment with her - I am standing. After some time the first leg movements came - she does not have an easy time, because the left leg is shortened and she seems to be able to control or steer it only to a limited extent.

Nach einiger Zeit der ersten Gewöhnung startete sie ihre ersten Laufversuche! Der Movita parierte prächtig auf der Wiese vor dem Haus und wir waren alle froh und begeistert, dass es funktioniert. Später sind wir ins Haus gegangen und glücklicherweise passte der Movita auf den cm genau durch die Tür.

After some time of getting used to it, she started her first attempts at running! The Movita parried magnificently on the meadow in front of the house and we were all happy and thrilled that it worked. Later we went into the house and luckily the Movita fit through the door exactly to the cm.

Zum Abschluss servierte uns Mercy Obst und ein gutes Essen. Und als besonderes Geschenk übergab sie uns einen Hahn aus ihrer Hühnerfarm. Yvonne, die tatkräftige junge Frau, die aktuell ihre Ausbildung zur Klemptnerin absolviert, machte unseren "James" reisefertig. Jetzt lebt er als stolzer Hahn unter lauter Hühnern auf dem Bauernhof weiter.

At the end, Mercy served us fruit and a good meal. And as a special gift, she gave us a rooster from her chicken farm. Yvonne, the energetic young woman, who is currently completing her training as a plumber, made our "James" ready for travel. Now he lives on as a proud rooster among all the chickens on the farm.
